# Amphibious Ready Group for MSFS

An Amphibious Ready Group of the United States Navy consists of a naval element - group of Warships, and a landing force – fleet of aircraft. Together, these elements and supporting units are trained, organized and equipped to perform amphibious operations, such as offensive coastal landings, but have been used in the past for humanitarian, MedVac and transport missions.

Amphibious Ready Groups consist of one Landing Helicopter Assault (LHA), a Landing Platform Dock (LPD) and supporting vessels, such as LSDs and Frigates. These typically carry MV-22B Ospreys, F-35Bs, AV8Bs and attack/transport helicopters.

Worldwide, there are normally at least three ARGs deployed at all times, typically one in the Mediterranean Sea, and two in the Western Pacific. Under a slightly different configuration, which may include cruisers, destroyers and submarines, the Amphibious Ready Group then becomes an Expeditionary Strike Group.

## Ships and Hard Decks

This product includes both STATIC AND MOVING SHIPS.&#x20;

All STATIC locations of the USS America are spawnable, and feature both a “Runway” (Ready to Fly) as well as a “Parking” (Cold and Dark Start) position. All other ships feature Hard Decks, which can be landed on, but are not spawnable. All ships are easily identifiable on the World Map with POIs.

* When taxiing the Osprey on the deck, use the "Assisted Taxiing" tool, available in the InGame Panel.
* Pause does not work on the deck of a moving ship. Do not pause the Sim while on the deck.

# USS George W. Bush for MSFS

Effective September 15th, 2023, USS George W. Bush for MSFS will **no longer be supported** and effectively becomes a discontinued product. This was the very first attempt to make a commercial MSFS Aircraft Carrier module, months before the Top Gun expansion was released, and hence is heavily limited on its capabilities. For that reason, we will no longer process requests of custom locations for the USS George W. Bush. USS George Bush will no longer be available at ORBX, and the price will lower on the MS Marketplace to the lowest possible price on the platform (as products cannot be easily removed from the market).

USS George H.W. Bush is the tenth and final Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States Navy. The carrier entered operations in 2009 and it currently operates from its homeport in Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia.

## Locations

Out of the box, the product includes 7 static, spawnable locations. This means that the carriers do not move, and flights can be started from the carrier deck. The carrier will be visible as an airport on the WorldMap. We have created custom ICAOs for the different locations:

* UGB1: Port of Origin (Norfolk)&#x20;
* UGB2: South of Key West&#x20;
* UGB3: Sea of Japan&#x20;
* UGB4: Persian Gulf&#x20;
* UGB5: South Mediterranean Sea&#x20;
* UGB6: Gulf of Aden&#x20;
* UGB7: South China Sea

## Limitations

* Carriers are all static objects. We have no plans to make them move since this is not possible with MSFS's SDK. Airports have fixed coordinates.
* The carriers have uncontrolled ATC. There is an ATC frequency for each, but these work as an uncontrolled airport (UNICOM). AI traffic does not visit this airport anyways.
* PAPI/VASI/OLS are not functional.
* Crash Detection must be off at all times, otherwise, you might have issues using the product.
* Catapults are not natively supported. Arrestors are only natively supported with aircraft that feature a native tailhook.
* No animated crew.&#x20;

# USS Lexington for MSFS

USS Lexington, nicknamed "Lady Lex", was the name ship of her class of two aircraft carriers built for the United States Navy during the 1920s. Originally designed as a battlecruiser, she was converted into one of the Navy's first aircraft carriers during construction to comply with the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922. The ship entered service in 1928 and was assigned to the Pacific Fleet for her entire career. Lexington participated in World War II, sinking during the Battle of the Coral Sea. We have created an accurate representation of USS Lexington functional with any aircraft on MSFS.

## Locations

Out of the box, the product includes 9 static, spawnable locations. This means that the carriers do not move (MSFS limitation), and flights can be started from the carrier. The carrier will be visible as a starred scenery on your MSFS map. We have created custom ICAOs for the different locations:

* CV201: Pearl Harbor&#x20;
* CV202: South East from Oahu&#x20;
* CV203: Wake Island
* &#x20;CV204: Coral Sea&#x20;
* CV205: Midway Atoll&#x20;
* CV206: San Diego&#x20;
* CV207: Panama Canal&#x20;
* CV208: English Channel&#x20;
* CV209: North Sea

## Limitations

# Introduction

Welcome aboard the first Studio-Level Functional Aircraft Carrier Pack for MSFS.

At Miltech Simulations, we have been developing the necessary tech for functional Aircraft Carriers for the past three years. This product is the result of extensive research and development of proprietary tech to enable all the real-life systems and operations that you may find in US and in international Aircraft Carriers.

* **Beautifully Modeled Ships:** four ships included on initial release, Ford-Class CVN-78, Nimitz-Class CVN-76, Arleigh-Burke Destroyers and Ticonderoga Cruisers. Great attention of detail, both on the deck area, as well as the hangar.&#x20;
* **Roadmap:** Additional ships, such as Independence-Class Ships and French Carrier Charles de Gaulle planned for free future updates. Other ship packs may be released as expansions.
* **Moving and Static Ships:** A total of 14 moving locations and 14 static (anchored) locations are included.
* **Miltech Simulations Supercarrier Pro Toolbar:** In-sim toolbar for full control of the carriers

## Selecting the Aircraft

Any aircraft, Stock or 3rd Party, from Cessnas to Fighter Jets are fully compatible with Miltech's Supercarrier Pro product. Just go for your favorite aircraft.&#x20;

We recommend you practice on the Stock F/A-18 for realism.&#x20;

Both are beautifully modeled ships. However, Ford-Class may be slightly easier for a beginner to start with, as the carrier deck has more space to move around.&#x20;

The pack includes a total of 14 Static Locations (7 CVN-76 and 7 CVN-78) and 14 Moving Locations (7 CVN-76 and 7 CVN-78).

* **Static locations** are meant to simulate "anchored ships". These are spawnable on deck and feature ILS and TACAN to make your flights easier. Static locations are identified by 4-alphanumeric ICAO codes.
* **Moving locations** are arguably more fun - landings are more challenging, carrier can be aligned to the wind and hangar is fully accessible. However, no ILS or TACAN is available. Moving locations are identified by 4-alphanumeric ICAO codes.

It's up to you which one you prefer. Static carriers offer an easier landing to practice, but crossed winds may be an issue. Moving carriers offer a more immersive experience, but lack navigation equipment. Begin preparing your approach by "Breaking the Deck" - within a 10nm radius of the ship, begin by flying around the ship in a Counter-clockwise direction, descending and decelerating for your approach. 1. **Moving Carriers:** Click on "Align to Wind" on the Supercarrier Toolbar, under Controls Tab. The carrier will rotate to a direction in which the runway is perfectly aligned with the winds.&#x20;
2. **Static Carriers:** Either go for the landing, or simply change your weather - it's a Sim after all ;)&#x20;

<summary><span data-gb-custom-inline data-tag="emoji" data-code="1f6ec">🛬</span> Landing Pattern and Final Approach</summary>

1. Enter your final approach at less than 5nm from the ship. Align yourself visually with the runway, and identify the approach lighting - FLOLS on the Port (left) side of the ship and LRLS on the stern (back) side of the ship. These are your glideslope indicator lights and horizontal alignment respectively. 2. <mark style="background-color:yellow;">Aim for Solid Amber</mark> on the LRLLS. <mark style="background-color:red;">Red means your are far left</mark>, <mark style="background-color:green;">Green means you are far to the right.</mark>&#x20;
3. Aim for the Ball (moving amber light on the FLOLS) to be aligned with the Green bar.
4. Continue flying the approach until the aircraft is "BALL". You will hear the pilot say this word to the LSO. As soon as the aircraft is "BALL", keep your eyes on 3 things: FLOLS, LRLS and AOA Indicator.
5. The FLOLS and LRLS will become available on the Miltech Supercarrier Toolbar for easier visibility as soon as the aircraft is BALL. **We highly recommend you use this one for final approach. It is also available for VR Users.**
6. Configure your aircraft. Flaps, Gear, Tailhook. **We highly recommend you use the Modern Arrestor Cables**, more information here: [Arrestor Cables](/supercarrier-pro/supercarriers/approach-and-landing-equipment-and-operations/arrestor-cables)

1. Keep your eyes on the lights instead of the runway, and listen to your LSO. As long as you keep the Ball aligned with the green bar and LRLS in Amber, you will be perfectly aligned with the runway. Looking at the runway may be deceiving.&#x20;
2. Keep your speed controlled. If your aircraft has an autothrottle, use it. The ideal landing speed for the F/A-18 is 135-140KIAS
3. Listen to your LSO. Act if you hear You're Low/You're High/You're Left/You're Right/You're Slow/You're Fast
   1. **Go around immediately if you hear "Waveoff"**

If you followed the LSO and Lights, you will arrive safe to the ground. Set power to Full Military Power (MIL) in case a last-minute Waveoff or Bolter occurs, and do not flare - no soft landings on aircraft carriers.

Touch the deck, catch the cables and wait for the aircraft to come to a full stop. Power to IDLE, Retract Tailhook (if used) and you're good to go.&#x20;

You may hear **BOLTER** - this indicates the aircraft has not waved off (may have landed correctly), but no cables were caught. Apply full throttle and perform a go-around. Immediate action is required as the aircraft is in danger of stalling or falling off the deck.

## Frequent Answered Questions

<details>

<summary>How to remove Chocks/Covers on Moving Carriers (FS24)</summary>

To remove pitot covers/chocks/etc in FS24 Moving Carriers, just use the “Quick Preflight” keybind (configure on your MSFS Controls settings and map to one key). This will remove everything on preflight, even on moving ships. Unfortunately, there is a hardcoded simulator limitation preventing walkarounds on moving ships.

<summary>Quick Taxi not Working (FS24)</summary>

Quick Taxi requires engines to be running in certain specific aircraft.&#x20;

One of such aircraft is the stock FA18. This is due to how hydraulic systems have been set up and how the joystick input is being detected, engines must be started before using Quick Taxi.

We are looking into other solutions to this problem.

# Loaded in a Carrier and my aircraft is invisible/partially loaded

This generally occurs when Supercarrier Pro has not loaded correctly. Closing and restarting the simulations should fix the issue.

# Aircraft Jitters/Jerky movements on Deck & Elevators

**Aircraft Jitter on Elevators**\
This effect is most noticeable when the aircraft is positioned on static platforms. Moving carriers tend to mitigate the issue to some extent. The behavior results from a core simulator limitation: the physics engine in MSFS is not fully designed to handle this type of movement smoothly.

**Aircraft Jitter in Other Conditions**\
Outside of elevators, similar jitter can occur across MSFS 2024 due to wind effects. The updated wave simulation interacts poorly with ships, causing exaggerated sway that impacts aircraft. Reducing the wind speed usually resolves the problem. This behavior has been reported to Asobo.

# Supercarrier Pro CTDs - On Spawn or when Flying to Carrier

We have identified that **REX Real Global Airport Textures may trigger Crash to Desktops** with our Supercarrier Pro product. We have been unable to identify what is the source bug resulting on these CTDs, but we are in communication with the team at REX to provide a solution to this issue.

In the meantime, please **uninstall REX Real Global Airport Textures.**&#x20;

### On AMD Graphics Cards:

We are aware of issues with AMD Graphics Cards that may result on Crash to Desktops. This issue is not unique to Supercarrier Pro, but rather a generalized MSFS Issue with stock arresting gear. This issue has been raised to Asobo for further investigation.

Luckily, we have found a workaround for those customers who own an AMD Graphics Card:&#x20;

* delete ***reference\_points.cfg*** on both&#x20;
  * miltechsimulations-supercarrier-pro\SimObjects\Boats\Miltech CVN78&#x20;
  * miltechsimulations-supercarrier-pro\SimObjects\Boats\Miltech USS76.&#x20;

**Do keep in mind that if you decide to do that, you must use “Modern Arrestors” on all landings - regardless if the aircraft has a tailhook or not.**

# TACAN/ILS Not Working

This issue seems to be related to Navigraph and similar software that replaces the stock Navigation data. It seems that Navigraph and similar apps that replace the default nav data will also override any custom TACANs and ILS for airports not in the database.

A solution/Workaround is under investigation.&#x20;


# Osprey/Harrier Sliding on the Deck

This is unfortunately an MSFS limitation with VTOL aircraft. A similar situation occurs with the Harrier and possibly the F-35B as well. VTOL aircraft will only grab onto the runway at low throttle/low speeds. There is a threshold in which the gear detaches as the VTOL code takes over, and it does not account for the movement of the ship. Essentially the ship will continue moving but the aircraft does not react to inertia There are a few ways around this issue:

## **MILTECH SIMULATIONS OSPREY**

1. Land with nacelles 60-75deg instead of VTOL landings when operating on moving carriers. This will give you some more control. After landing, throttle to IDLE and apply braking
2. Use quick taxi/taxi assist when taxiing on the deck on moving ships, OR taxi at low speed/low throttle

This issue does not occur at static ship locations.

## DC DESIGNS HARRIER

Unfortunately, the Harrier Flight Model is not compatible with any moving ship at this time. We are working with DC Designs to find a solution to this issue.


# Shimmering "Bounding Box" on Arrestor Cables

<figure><img src="/files/GMNYNTjHdClFwj8dF7ZC" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

If you look closely at the arresting gear, you may see these "shimmering bounding boxes" around them. This has unfortunately been a long-time MSFS bug, and has been reported to Asobo many times by us and other developers. This graphical anomaly may also result in flickering artifacts all across the screen for some users, particularly in FS24 and in VR. We have been unable to find an exact root cause for why it only occurs to selected users.&#x20;

These anomalies are caused by the **stock Asobo arrestor cables.** Any carrier ships using the stock arrestor cables have these bounding boxes that represent where the cables should be located. If you catch one of the cables (when using an aircraft with tailhook) you will see how these “bounding boxes” attach to the tailhook as the cables should.

Unfortunately, this bug has been around since the Top Gun expansion was released, and was never fixed. In general, Stock arrestors are a hit-or-miss - not only the visible texture issues, but also they can be more or less effective depending on the carrier location. **For that reason we have developed the “modern arrestors”, which replace and improve upon the functionality of stock arresting gear**, but decided to also keep the stock arrestors for those who prefer using them.

Luckily, there is a (partial) solution to this issue - you can easily remove the stock arrestors, and get rid of the “bounding box shimmering effect”:

* &#x20;delete ***reference\_points.cfg*** on both&#x20;

  * miltechsimulations-supercarrier-pro\SimObjects\Boats\Miltech CVN78&#x20;
  * miltechsimulations-supercarrier-pro\SimObjects\Boats\Miltech USS76.&#x20;

**However, if you decide to do that, you must use “Modern Arrestors” on all landings - regardless if the aircraft has a tailhook or not.**


# Multiplayer Sync freezing screen after Restart

Multiplayer Sync may freeze your simulator if the flight has been restarted. This is because restarting a flight does not reload all the objects again, instead, it just teleports the aircraft to the runway.

Do not restart your flight using the "Restart" button to avoid this issue. Instead, exit the flight, return to the WorldMap, select the carrier, and start a new flight.&#x20;


# "Shaky Camera"/"Shaky Ship" Bug - Moving Ships

If you have experienced a bug on moving ships in which the carrier/camera "shakes" (moving ships only) - Congrats, you have a very powerful PC.

This issue occurs when the simulator runs at a very high and unstable framerate, higher than the rate of update of the ship's position. The violent framerate deviations cause the ship to accelerate and decelerate at uneven intervals, resulting in this flickering bug.&#x20;

The refresh rate of the ship is approximately 50 times a second, so to solve this issue, we must limit the framerate just under this figure:

### Solution 1: VSync

1. Verify if you have a GSync-enabled monitor. If you do, disable GSync.
2. On Simulator Graphic Settings menu, enable VSync. Set VSync to 33% or 50% of the refresh rate of your monitor. This will limit your FPS as well - find the best compromise between framerate limiting and reduction of the flickering issue.
3. Launch the carrier. Change the settings until the carriers and the simulator run smoothly.

### Solution 2: Limit your FPS

1. Close the Simulator
2. Launch Nvidia Control Panel or AMD Equivalent
3. Under "program settings", select Microsoft Flight Simulator
4. Under "Max Frame Rate", set it to **exactly 48 FPS**
5. Relaunch the Simulator. Problem should now be fixed.

# Misplaced Crew/Teleport not functioning/Quick Taxi not functioning

You may see misplaced crew, teleport may fail or quick taxi may fail if the flight has been restarted.&#x20;

Do not restart your flight using the "Restart" button to avoid this issue. Instead, exit the flight, return to the WorldMap, select the carrier, and start a new flight.&#x20;

We are still investigating what is the root cause of this issue.

# Landing Tab

1. **Enable Modern Arrestors:** Modern Arrestors enable arrestor cable functionality to any aircraft, regardless of whether the aircraft has a tailhook or not. It is recommended to use Modern arrestors, even with aircraft that do feature a tailhook, as the stock MSFS tailhook may not be effective at certain locations.    1. To enable modern arrestors, click the button in the Approach tab on approach. The arrestors will engage upon contact with the flight deck. Modern arrestors remain active until manually deactivated.&#x20;
   2. Modern arrestors can be toggled "always on" on the settings tab. The "enable modern arrestors" button on the Landing page will disappear if "Modern arrestors always on" is enabled on the settings tab.&#x20;
2. **Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System (FLOLS):** Type of Optical Landing System (also commonly referred as "ball") used to give glidepath information to pilots in the terminal phase of landing. This information can also be visible on the FLOLS lights on the port side of the carrier. 3. **Long Range Laser Lineup System (LRLLS):** Uses color-coded lasers to provide horizontal lineup information of approaching aircraft. The color and flashing rate of the laser indicates the angle with respect of the centreline. 4. **Scoring:** Provides a score from 0-5 (EASY MODE from 0-10), as well as LSO Feedback, based on the accuracy of the landing. There are two modes available: Regular and Easy, configurable on the Config Tab. 5. **Scoring Details:** Opens on click of the (i) Icon. Provides details on the scoring, such as Altitude, AoA and Alignment scoring, as well as cable caught.
6. **Information:** Provides brief information on the functionality of the Toolbar.-

1. **Quick Taxi:** With Quick Taxi, you can easily reposition the plane with the joystick. Move the stick up or down to move forward or backward. Move the stick left or right to rotate left or right. Particularly useful when moving inside the Hangar, when pushback is required, or with VTOL aircraft, such as the Osprey and Harrier.&#x20;
2. **Align to Wind:** Only available on moving carriers. Aligns the carrier with the current wind direction. Doesn't work with multiplayer auto-sync. Align to Wind should be used when the aircraft is not on deck or in the hangar. If the aircraft happens to be on the deck or hangar, it's best to immediately teleport - otherwise the aircraft will fall in the water.
3. **Multiplayer Auto-sync:** Only available on moving carriers. Syncs the position of your local carrier with the multiplayer server. Required for multiplayer flight on moving carriers, as otherwise the location would be different across different players. 4. **Catapults:** Selects, activates, and executes the catapult launch sequence on the selected catapult. First click selects the catapult. Second Click (yellow checkmark, only available when aircraft has been positioned on the catapult correctly) activates the launching sequence and JBD. 5. **Elevators:** Moves selected elevator up/down. Ford-class features 3 elevators, while Nimitz Class has four.&#x20;
6. **Teleport (Experimental)**: Teleports aircraft to selected location - Runway, Parking, Hangar or Approach. Sets the state of the aircraft according to selected Teleport. Experimental feature. # Teleporting (Experimental Feature)

Teleporting is an experimental, in-development feature. It is fully compatible with the stock F/A-18, and most stock aircraft included with MSFS.\

However, Teleport can be problematic with some 3rd party aircraft, and some functions of the aircraft can become broken, such as parking brake, gear, systems, and engine. The teleport instructs the plane to revert to a spawn-at-parking state, but it seems in some cases not all systems properly update.

Teleporting can be used on moving ships to quickly spawn on the carrier's deck after starting a flight in the air. Teleport is currently possible to:

1. **Discord:** Launches invite to Discord server.
2. **Toggle LSO On/Off:** Toggles Landing Signal Officer callouts and feedback on/off
3. **Toggle Marker On/Off:** Toggles visible and fixed POI Marker on/off. Can be used to easily locate the carrier.
4. **Toggle Modern Arrestors always on:** Modern Arrestors will remain always on. No need to re-enable modern arrestors every time the sim is loaded.&#x20;
5. **Easier Feedback and Scoring**: Reduces the difficulty of the LSO feedback and scoring. For more information, [Landing Signal Officer (LSO)](/supercarrier-pro/supercarriers/approach-and-landing-equipment-and-operations/landing-signal-officer-lso). Easier Feedback and Scoring also makes FLOLFs slightly easier by still showing a dot if you're below or above the glideslope. LSO Feedback on Easy mode is given as score out of 10 instead of out of 5. This is to differentiate easy scores from normal scores.
6. **Reset Settings:** Resets all settings to default values.

## Description

The Ford-class aircraft carriers are the newest and most advanced class of aircraft carriers in the United States Navy. They are designed to be more efficient, capable, and powerful than any other carrier in service. The Ford-class carriers have a number of new features, including an electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS), a new arresting gear system, and a new weapons handling system. They are also larger and more capable than the Nimitz-class carriers that they are replacing.&#x20;

Compared to the Nimitz Class, the Ford has a larger deck and hangar. However, it has 3 elevators and 3 arrestor ables instead of 4.&#x20;

# Flight Deck Equipment

## Catapults

All CATOBAR carriers are equipped with catapults for assisted take-off. CATOBAR is a system used for the launch and recovery of aircraft from the deck of an aircraft carrier. Under this technique, aircraft launch using a catapult-assisted take-off and land on the ship (the recovery phase) using arrestor wires.

Nimitz-class carriers are equipped with four steam catapults. Similarly, Ford-class carriers are equipped 4 more modern EMALS catapults.

## Jet Blast Deflectors (JBDs)

Aircraft carriers use jet blast deflectors at the rear of aircraft catapults, positioned to protect other aircraft from exhaust blast damage. The jet blast deflector lies flush with and serves as a portion of the flight deck until the aircraft to be launched rolls over it on the way to the catapult. When the aircraft is clear of the deflector, the heavy panel is raised into position to redirect the hot jet blast.

## Elevators

Elevators provide movement of aircraft, vehicles, and equipment from the hangar bay and the flight deck. Elevators are typically located near the Bridge of the carrier. In the case of the Nimitz-class, 4 elevators are available. On the Ford-class, 3 elevators.

## Arrestor Cables

An arresting gear, or arrestor gear, is a mechanical system used to rapidly decelerate an aircraft as it lands. Arresting gear on aircraft carriers is an essential component of naval aviation. During a normal arrestment, the tailhook engages the wire and the aircraft's kinetic energy is transferred to hydraulic damping systems attached below the carrier deck.

## Hangar Bay

The hangar bay is located below the flight deck and spawns two-thirds of the total length of the carrier. It is used to store aircraft, supplies, ammunition, and cargo. It is accessible through the elevators.

## Approach and Recovery Operations

In real-life navy operations, there are multiple cases of recovery operations depending on weather conditions, time of day, formation and traffic. In this guide, we will only go over a "Case I" Recovery Operation.&#x20;

### NATOPS Recovery Operations (Ford Class and Nimitz Class)

As the Aircraft enters the carrier control area, a 50-nautical-mile radius around the carrier, the aircraft begins preparing for the recovery operation. At 10nm, the aircraft will begin flying the approach as follows:

1. **Prepare for Approach:** Check the weather conditions around you. If you are landing on a static carrier, check the ATIS for wind conditions. If you are landing on a moving carrier, we recommend you align the carrier with the wind using the [Miltech Universal Carrier Toolbar](/supercarrier-pro/supercarriers/miltech-universal-carrier-toolbar)
2. **Hold for Traffic on Approach:** form a left-hand circle tangent to the ship's course with the ship in the 3-o'clock position (Green Circle), and a maximum diameter of 5 nautical miles. Minimum holding altitude is 2,000 feet (610 m), with a minimum of 1,000 feet (300 m) vertical separation between holding altitudes.

2. **Break the Deck:** Leave the holding pattern from position 3 (at 9-o'clock from the Carrier). Descend to 800 feet and 350kts before you arrive at the "initial" which is 3 nautical miles (5.6 km; 3.5 mi) astern the ship, paralleling the ship's course. Establish a 60-second separation between other aircraft.
3. **Prepare for Recovery:** Configure the aircraft for landing. Armament switches off, hook down, gear down, flaps and speedbrake as required. Open the [Miltech Universal Carrier Toolbar](/supercarrier-pro/supercarriers/miltech-universal-carrier-toolbar) and wait for contact with the LSO. Activate Modern Arrestors (recommended). Turn 180 degrees and position the aircraft flying opposite to the Carrier, along the Port side (downwind Leg).&#x20;

4. **Prepare for "the Final 90":** The final checkpoint for the pilot is crossing the ship's wake, at which time the aircraft should be approaching final landing heading. Begin turning at approximately 500ft. You must be at roughly 370ft at the end of the turn, and aligned with the centreline.&#x20;
5. **Follow the Lights:** Your attention must now be focused on keeping proper glideslope, lineup, angle of attack and speed until touchdown. Use the FLOLS and LRLS (we recommend using those on the Supercarrier Toolbar for better visibility) to keep the aircraft aligned.&#x20;
   1. FLOLS: Keep the Ball aligned with green bar.
   2. LRLS: Keep solid amber.
   3. Angle of Attack: Use your aircraft indicators.
   4. Speed: Keep final approach speed (135-140kts on the F/A-18).&#x20;
6. **Listen to your LSO:** At 0.75nm behind the ship, you enter the "groove". The pilot will automatically report with the LSO with the "BALL" Radiocall. LSO radio calls are automatic and will be heard regardless of which frequency are you on or whether the Supercarrier Toolbar is open or not (unless LSO and Feedback has been deactivated).
   1. If at any time the LSO calls for a **Waveoff**, perform a go-around.
7. **Fly the Glideslope:** You will now fly the rest of the approach using the visual indications on the FLOLS and LRLS, and verbal instructions given by the LSO.&#x20;
   1. Line up on landing area centerline is critical because it is only 120 feet in width, and aircraft are often parked within a few feet of either side.
   2. Glideslope is also critical as you may miss the cables.&#x20;
   3. Speed is critical as you may come in too fast and the arrestor cables won't brake you in time.
   4. And finally, AOA is critical as you may impact the runway with the tailhook first.&#x20;

8. **Touchdown:** Set power to Full Military Power (MIL) in case a last-minute Waveoff or Bolter occurs, and do not flare - no soft landings on aircraft carriers. If everything goes well, you will catch the wires with the tailhook and the aircraft will come to a full stop. If not, you will either abort the approach and go around (Waveoff) or you will touch down and miss the cables (Bolter).&#x20;
   1. In any of the latter cases, you will re-enter the landing pattern and retry the approach.
   2. Time of reaction is critical, especially on a **Bolter -** occurs when the aircraft has not waved off (may have landed correctly) but no cables were caught. Requires that the pilot quickly applies full throttle and performs a go-around.


# Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System (FLOLS)

The Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System, often referred to as the "FLOLS," is a crucial technology used for aircraft carrier operations. The primary purpose of the FLOLS is to aid pilots during the critical phase of landing on an aircraft carrier. This system provides visual cues to approaching aircraft, helping them maintain the correct glide path for a safe and precise landing. The system is typically set for a 3.5-degree glideslope targeting the wires.&#x20;

1. **Datum Lights:** a horizontal row of green lamps used to give the pilot a reference against which they may judge their position relative to the glide slope.
2. **Ball:** Orange light that moves up/down relative to the datum. Indicates the position of the aircraft in reference to the glideslope. Must be kept aligned with the datum for a precise landing.
3. **Wave-Off Lights:** Red flashing lamps which, when lit, indicate that the pilot must add full power and go around – a mandatory command. The LSO will initiate a wave off any time the aircraft is not within safe parameters for the approach.&#x20;


# Long Range Lineup System (LRLS)

Uses color-coded lasers to provide horizontal lineup information of approaching aircraft. The color and flashing rate of the laser indicate the angle with respect of the centreline.&#x20;

* An increasing rate of flashing indicates that the aircraft is deviating away from the centerline.&#x20;
* Green indicates an angle of deviation towards the Starboard side
* Red indicates an angle of deviation towards the Port side


# Instrument Approach & Communications Equipment

## Tactical Air Navigation System (TACAN)

Navigation system used by military aircraft. It provides the user with bearing and distance to a ship-borne station. A TACAN typically has a range of 200 miles. TACAN is only available on static ship locations.&#x20;

## Instrument Landing System (ILS/ICLS)

This operates much like a traditional ILS system, but it is only operational for US aircraft carriers. Precision radio navigation system that provides short-range guidance to aircraft to allow them to approach a runway at night or in bad weather. ILS is only available on static ship locations.&#x20;

## Carrier Air Traffic Control Center (CATCC) & Communications

Static carriers are equipped with a UNICOM frequency for AI and multiplayer traffic communications using the stock MSFS ATC. Moving carriers are not equipped with UNICOM frequencies.&#x20;

Static carriers are also equipped with ATIS for weather reports.

# Landing Signal Officer (LSO)

Miltech's Supercarrier Pro package features a full LSO. The Landing Signal Officer is a naval aviator trained to facilitate the safe and expeditious recovery of aircraft aboard aircraft carriers. The LSO assists the pilots by giving information via radio handsets.

LSO is always active on Miltech Supercarriers except if "LSO And Feedback" is turned off on the Supercarrier Toolbar [Settings Tab](/supercarrier-pro/supercarriers/miltech-universal-carrier-toolbar/settings-tab)

* The LSO will become active regardless if Supercarrier Toolbar is open or not, and regardless of which radio frequency the aircraft is set to.&#x20;
* LSO activates at a distance of 0.75nm of the Carrier. The pilot automatically makes a call to the LSO when in final approach - either "BALL" or "CLARA"
  * BALL indicates aircraft is on track for landing and has the FLOLS Ball in sight. Typically followed by "Roger Ball" from the LSO.&#x20;
  * CLARA indicates the aircraft is off track or FLOLS ball is not on sight. Usually followed by instructions on which way to align, and soon after either "BALL" or "Waveoff"

## Approach Guidance

The LSO will guide your approach with callouts and begin judging your performance.&#x20;

First, a "State Feedback" is given on your initial situation on approach following this matrix. The following Matrix also indicates how many points are deducted given the different callouts. Points are deducted based on how much time you spend in each of the color levels.

Following the State Feedback Matrix, the LSO will continue giving progressive feedback until the aircraft is on the ground OR Bolters OR Waveoffs, following this matrix:

## Immediate Action Callouts

* **BOLTER:** Indicates the aircraft has not waved off (may have landed correctly) but no cables were caught. Requires that the pilot quickly applies full throttle and performs a go-around. Immediate action is required as the aircraft is in danger of stalling or falling off the deck.
* **WAVEOFF:** Indicates that either the approach has been unstable, or aircraft is beyond the parameters for a safe landing. Requires the pilot to apply throttle and perform a go-around.&#x20;

## Feedback

Feedback is given after Recovery has been successful, the aircraft Bolters or a Wave-off is triggered. Feedback is based on the two matrices above, and whether the aircraft has had a stable and correct approach.&#x20;

Specific Feedback is provided clicking on the (i) Icon. Final scoring and feedback is based on three main categories: Alignment, AoA and Altitude. Final scoring is given from 0-5 Points on Regular mode and 0-10 Points on Easy mode.

Grading goes according to the following table:

## Difficulty

The "Regular" mode is representative of the real challenges and difficulty of landing on an aircraft carrier in real life. However, an "Easy mode" was developed for training of unexperienced pilots, as well as entertainment purposes.

* Regular scores are given from 0-5 Points
* Easy Mode scores are given from 0-10 Points

# Arrestor Cables

## Stock MSFS Arrestor Cables

The Miltech Supercarrier Pro features both Stock MSFS Arrestor Cables at all locations (Static and Moving).&#x20;

Stock MSFS Arrestor Cables are compatible with aircraft with tailhooks (eg. the Stock F/A-18 included with the Top Gun Expansion). Stock Cables are unfortunately more or less effective depending on the location of the carrier due to a bug with the arrestors and the MSFS earth model.

For that reason, and for universal compatibility with all aircraft products (Stock and 3rd Party) **we highly recommend you use "Modern Arrestors"** regardless of aircraft and location.

## Modern Arrestor Cables

Modern Arrestors have been developed as an alternative due to the limitations of the Stock MSFS Arrestor Cables. Modern Arrestors **work universally with any aircraft**, regardless of carrier location and whether the aircraft has a tailhook or not.

To engage Modern Arrestors, the Miltech Supercarrier Toolbar must be open on the Landing tab and "Enable Modern Arrestors" must be active. For more information: [Landing Tab](/supercarrier-pro/supercarriers/miltech-universal-carrier-toolbar/landing-tab)

* Take in mind that the Modern Arrestors deactivate automatically if the toolbar menu is closed. Toolbar must be open at all times when the arrestors are being used.&#x20;
* Modern Arrestors engage automatically when the aircraft contacts the ground. As the aircraft comes to a full stop, the cables disengage. Modern arrestors remains activated for another landing unless manually disactivated.&#x20;
* Modern Arrestors can be "enabled always on" through the Settings tab. This means that Modern Arrestors will be used on all carrier landings by default, and it won't require the user to manually activate them every time.&#x20;
* For an effective recovery, it is recommended that you touch down at a speed no greater than 160 KIAS
* Modern Arrestors will also work for landings at any hard surface - Airports, other vessels, etc.&#x20;


# Launch Operations

Both the Nimitz-Class and Ford-Class carriers are equipped with four catapults - Catapults 1 and 2 are on the bow and catapults 3 and 4 are on the waist.&#x20;

Select the desired catapult for takeoff using the [Miltech Universal Carrier Toolbar](/supercarrier-pro/supercarriers/miltech-universal-carrier-toolbar) under the Controls tab.&#x20;

Once the catapult has been selected, it will become active and the crew will guide you to the selected catapult.&#x20;

## Catapult Launch Operations

### Prelaunch

1. **Taxi to Catapult:** Apply little throttle and move carefully on the deck at low speed. Keep your wings folded (if applicable) and Nose Wheel Steering to HIGH. Use Quick Taxi if required.
2. **Align yourself with the Catapult:** A taxi director will guide you to the selected catapult. Follow the hand signals to turn left/right or continue forward until the Taxi Director indicates you to stop. Brake until full stop and set power to IDLE.

3. **Configure Aircraft:** Lower launchbar and unfold wings (if applicable). Set takeoff flaps and perform takeoff checklists. Deactivate Nose Wheel Steering. Click on the yellow checkmark to arm the catapult.

### Arm the Catapult

4. **Crew Checks:** Green vests (catapult crew) will now secure the launchbar and set the catapult for launch. The aircraft may move slightly as its being aligned with the catapult. Jet Blast Deflectors will rise automatically. Green vests will then signal the aircraft is ready for launch.

5. **Salute the Catapult Crew:** Salute the catapult crew by clicking the green arrow on the Supercarrier Toolbar. This signals that you're all set for launch. Apply full throttle now. The aircraft will not move until catapulted.&#x20;

### Launch

6. **Shooter Checks:** The shooter will perform final checks and indicate the launch. Aircraft will accelerate along the catapult and reach takeoff speed in less than 3 seconds - do not move the ailerons, elevators, or rudder until the aircraft has vacated the deck.&#x20;

6. **Rotate:** Rotate the nose and establish a positive rate of climb. Retract gear and flaps as required.  Fly parallel to the carrier until you have reached 500ft and proceed to the desired course.&#x20;


# Multiplayer Operations

Restarting a flight after Multiplayer Sync may freeze the simulator. Launch a new flight from the WorldMap every time you wish to restart a flight. ## Static vs Moving

Static Carriers are inherently compatible with multiplayer as there are no "moving parts". This means that the carrier is static at that location on all systems on the network.&#x20;

On the contrary, Moving carriers can be located at slightly different locations due to their moving nature. For that reason, moving carriers must be "synced for multiplayer" through the [Miltech Universal Carrier Toolbar](/supercarrier-pro/supercarriers/miltech-universal-carrier-toolbar) under the Controls tab.

* After syncing for multiplayer, the aircraft will spawn on the carrier deck automatically.&#x20;
* Align to Wind cannot be used over multiplayer. All other functions are available.
* Multiplayer syncing resets every hour. A countdown is visible on the Supercarrier Toolbar. After the counter reaches 0, Multiplayer Sync will deactivate. To continue flying over multiplayer and synced with other players, click on "Multiplayer sync" again.&#x20;
* It is recommended that if little time is left before the counter reaches zero, you wait until the syncing restarts so it doesn't interrupt your flight.&#x20;

## Limitations over Multiplayer

Unfortunately, Multiplayer on MSFS is still quite limited. We are engineering ways around these limitations, but these will only come at a future update. As of initial release, the limitations are the following:

* Multiplayer on moving carriers require syncing. Syncing restarts every hour.
* Animations do not sync over multiplayer. Eg. if an aircraft goes down on the elevator or JBDs are actioned, you will not see the animation, only the aircraft.&#x20;
* &#x20;It is possible that you may see aircraft floating beyond the bounds of the aircraft carrier flight deck. This is due to inaccuracies in the aircraft position synced over Multiplayer.

# Recommended Hardware Configuration

**A minimum 2% Deadzone in Cyclic (In some cases up to 5% on old or inaccurate hardware) is required for AFCS to function correctly.** Not enough deadzone will result in the input controllers and the system inputs conflicting with each other, leading to erratic or unexpected behavior.

## Primary Flight Controls Configuration

If you are not familiar with helicopters, this guide should help you understand the basic controls that make them fly, and help you configure the controls correctly.

* **The Cyclic:** This stick sits between your legs. Moving it forward or back controls the helicopter's pitch (nose up or down). Moving it side-to-side controls the helicopter's roll (leaning left or right).
  * Pitch Binding: `ELEVATOR AXIS` or `CYCLIC LONGITUDINAL AXIS`
  * Roll Binding: `AILERONS AXIS` or `CYCLIC LATERAL AXIS`
  * Both Pitch and Roll can be trimmed, making flight more comfortable for the user:
    * Cyclic Pitch Trim Binding: `INCREASE ROTOR LONGITUDINAL TRIM` and `DECREASE ROTOR LONGITUDINAL TRIM`
    * Cyclic Roll Trim Binding: `INCREASE ROTOR LATERAL TRIM` and `DECREASE ROTOR LATERAL TRIM`
* **The Collective:** This lever is on your left side. Raising the collective increases the pitch of all rotor blades at once, generating more lift and making the helicopter rise. Lowering it causes the helicopter to descend.
  * Collective Binding: `THROTTLE AXIS` or `COLLECTIVE AXIS`
  * **Is there Throttle?:** The CH47 does NOT have manual throttle control. Instead, the governor (device that automatically maintains a constant rotor speed (RPM) in a helicopter) will adjust the throttle as required. <mark style="color:red;">**DO NOT USE**</mark> `HELICOPTER THROTTLE AXIS`
* **Directional Pedals:** These are on the floor at your feet. Pushing the pedals lets you turn the helicopter nose left or right.
  * Directional Pedals Binding: `RUDDER AXIS` or `TAIL ROTOR AXIS`&#x20;
  * Ground Steering Control Bindings: `RUDDER AXIS` or `TAIL ROTOR AXIS`, however, you must have Power Steering Control set to SWIVEL for ground steering to function. More details here: [Center Console](/miltech-simulations-ch47d/aircraft-and-systems/overview-cockpit/center-console)

## Control Sensitivity Configuration

The design of the CH47D makes it an inherently stable aircraft. No pedal input is required to keep the aircraft under control. For this reason, Control Sensibility is a personal preference of the user and we don't have any particular recommendations to make.

Xbox Controller users may benefit from dampened sensibility in the cyclic axis for more precise control in hover.&#x20;

### LVARs

Nearly all switches (unless those with default MSFS Keybinds) can be keybinded to hardware using software such as SPAD.next and LVARs. The LVAR list is too long to fit here, but there are several methods to retrieve LVARs for any 3rd party aircraft. All LVARs on the CH47D are clearly named to make them easy to locate and bind to keys.

# Quick Start Guide

## Getting Started

The CH47D is a rather simple aircraft to understand. The Tandem Rotor Design makes it an inherently stable helicopter, requiring no antitorque pedaling. Systems-wise, is what you would expect from an aircraft designed in the 1960s - your typical steam gauges.

You must, however, make sure your controls are correctly configured for helicopter flight. Out of the box, MSFS will interpret your regular throttle, elevator, and aileron axis as collective, cyclic longitudinal, and cyclic lateral axis respectively.  However, it is important that if you are used to flying other helicopters, the CH47D **does not make use of "Helicopter Throttle Axis"** and therefore you must keep it deactivated on your hardware.&#x20;

1. Launch MSFS and select Miltech Simulations CH47D.&#x20;

# Cargo Load Operations - Internal

### Loading Procedure

The [Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)](/miltech-simulations-ch47d/aircraft-and-systems/electronic-flight-bag-efb) is used to load and unload internal cargo to the aircraft.&#x20;

1. Turn on the EFB screen by pressing the **HOME** Button
2. Navigate to the **LOAD** page
3. Select "Internal Loads"

4. Load/Unload cargo by pressing on the available options.&#x20;

### Loading Procedure

The [Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)](/miltech-simulations-ch47d/aircraft-and-systems/electronic-flight-bag-efb) is used to load and unload internal cargo to the aircraft.&#x20;

1. Turn on the EFB screen by pressing the **HOME** Button
2. Navigate to the **LOAD** page
3. Select "External Loads"

4. Load/Unload cargo by pressing on the available options.&#x20;
   1. A single cargo load type (External or Internal) can be active at any given moment.
   2. Selecting a different load type will unload the active option, and load the selected option.
5. **Select the correct Sling Mode on the overhead panel.** Sling mode depends on the type of load (Tandem or Mid).&#x20;
   1. The tablet will display a blinking red error message if the sling mode is not configured correctly.&#x20;
   2. If not configured correctly, the aircraft won't be able to pick up loads.

6. **The selected object will spawn near the aircraft - usually at 9 o'clock.** Takeoff and establish a hover.
7. Use the Tablet Radar to slowly approach the object:
   1. Sustain a controlled hover. Altitude must be **at or slightly above the target altitude as indicated on the tablet.**
   2. Approach the object slowly.&#x20;
   3. **Object (Red Dot) must be within the area marked by the green circle.** Keep altitude as close to the target as possible.
   4. Sustain hover for a few seconds while the cargo is loaded.
   5. Upon confirmation that cargo has been successfully loaded, apply collective and increase altitude.&#x20;

8. **Cargo will be automatically dropped upon crossing below 50ft.**&#x20;
9. **The cargo sling may break in high G/violent maneuvers/overspeed.**&#x20;
10. **Dropped cargo can be picked up again. However, you must increase the altitude >100ft before dropped cargo is available for pickup again.**

Firefighting is only available on missions. To start a firefighting mission:

### Accessing Firefighting Missions

1. Launch a flight with the CH47D at any airport in the world.&#x20;
2. Turn on the EFB screen by pressing the **HOME** Button
3. Navigate to the **MISSION** page

4. Select any mission from the list.
5. Wait a few minutes for the mission to load completely. The aircraft will be automatically relocated to the start location and all required mission objects will be loaded.

As the mission is started, you'll get a brief with mission details.

1. <mark style="color:red;">**Load the Water Bucket:**</mark>

   1. Navigate to the EFB **LOAD** page
   2. Select "External Loads"
   3. Select Bucket
   4. **Select the correct Sling Mode on the overhead panel.** Sling mode for the Bucket is "Mid"
   5.

8. <mark style="color:red;">**Fly to the mission location**</mark> as per the Mission Brief.&#x20;
   1. Be careful or not doing any high-G maneuver, and control your speed. The bucket rope may break under violent flying conditions.
9. Upon arriving at the mission area, find the nearest body of water to fill your water bucket.
   1. Slow down and come to a hover over the water.&#x20;
   2. Lower your altitude to 20ft for 3 seconds.
   3. The bucket will automatically fill. No internal cockpit confirmation is available at this time.
10. <mark style="color:red;">**Fly to the location of the fires**</mark>
    1. Approach the fires at an altitude of **no more than 350ft** above ground and speed of 20kts maximum.
    2. Fly directly above the fires. The water will automatically deploy and extinguish the fire.
    3. Repeat until all fire is fully extinguished.

4. **Cyclic:** It allows the pilot to tilt the rotor discs. By tilting the rotor discs, the pilot directs the helicopter's thrust, enabling forward, backward, lateral, and combined movement.
5. **Collective:** It controls the overall pitch angle of all the main rotor blades simultaneously. Increasing the collective pitch increases the lift generated by the rotor system, causing the helicopter to rise.
6. **Directional Pedals:** These pedals control the yaw (rotation around the vertical axis) of the helicopter. Pressing the left pedal increases the pitch of the aft rotor blades and reduces pitch on the forward rotor blades. Conversely, pressing the right pedal increases pitch on the forward rotor blades and decreases it on the aft rotor blades. This differential adjustment of blade pitch controls the torque balance and allows the pilot to turn the helicopter left or right.&#x20;

18. **Emergency Lights:** Arms or disarms the emergency exit lights.
19. **Dome Lights:** Three-Way Switch (DOME WHT, OFF, NVG). Turns On/Off the Dome lights. DOME WHT uses the white lighting lamps in the cabin to illuminate the cockpit and cargo bay. NVG makes use of the green lighting only, illuminating the cockpit.&#x20;
20. **Instrument/Overhead Flood Lights Dimmer:** Controls intensity of both Instrument and Overhead Flood lights. For this knob to function, one or both switches must be set to the ON position.
21. **Pilot Search Lights:** Toggles Pilot side Search Light on/off. Search Lights are generally used as Landing Lights.

# Aircraft Systems


# GPS Systems

By default, the CH47D includes the Stock Aera GPS. This is a rather basic GPS system, that will allow you to create simple flight plans, "Direct-to" flights and access the map and navaids. Real operators of the CH47D use these types of systems in real life.

The Aera is by default hidden. To access it, go to the EFB - CONFIG Tab - "Enable Handheld GPS"

The GPS screen may be difficult to see in small displays. The GPS Screen is undockable with the stock "Alt+Click" command.

PMS50's GTN750 GPS is also available as an optional module for PC (Soon Coming to Xbox). This GPS System is far more complex and it does allow for full flight planning. The base module is required, download from here: <https://pms50.com/msfs/downloads/gtn750-basic/>


# AFCS System (Autopilot)

**AFCS IS NOT NATIVELY SUPPORTED BY MSFS - IMPLEMENTATION IS EXPERIMENTAL**

Due to the limitations of AP Systems on MSFS, the current implementation of autopilot relies on a series of custom PID Controllers to manage the helicopter controls.&#x20;

Known issues that will be improved overtime include:

* Tendency for the aircraft to cruise in a "crab" position with HDG mode engaged at high speeds. A "crab angle compensation controller" is in the works, however this adds a significant amount of complexity to the system and further testing is required.
* Under some conditions, the controllers may overreact to small heading changes.
* Under some conditions, the system may generate oscillations.
* Conflicts with Collective hardware if not set to IDLE when altitude modes are engaged.

**A minimum 2% Deadzone in Cyclic and Pedal (In some cases up to 5% on old or inaccurate hardware) is required for AFCS to function correctly.** Not enough deadzone will result in the input controllers and the system inputs conflicting with each other, leading to erratic or unexpected behavior.

### System Overview

Miltech Simulations CH47D Features a three-degree of freedom Advanced Flight Control System (AFCS), designed to alleviate the load on the pilot during cruising, long flights and terrain-following flights. The system controls the aircraft in the vertical, roll and yaw axes - three modes are available: HDG Select, Baro ALT Hold and RAD ALT Hold.

### HDG Select

HDG Select Provides automatic control of the aircraft heading, following the Selected Heading on the Pilot Side HSI.&#x20;

* To engage, make sure that the AFCS SYSTEM SELECT is ON (either in the 1 / 2 / BOTH position). Only then press the HDG button to engage system.&#x20;
* Upon pressing, the aircraft will automatically take over cyclic and pedal controls in order to follow and maintain the selected heading. Important to note that any cyclic or pedal input when HDG Select is engaged will ultimately conflict with the AFCS Commands.
  * At airspeeds under 25 Knots, the aircraft will make exclusive use of pedals to yaw in place. Cyclic input is minimal and used exclusively to maintain the aircraft leveled during the turn. The pilot maintains full control over pitch and cyclic trim.&#x20;
  * At airspeeds above 25 knots, the aircraft will make use of pedal and cyclic to perform coordinated turns at speed. The pilot maintains full control over pitch and cyclic trim.&#x20;
* The only source of HDG navigation data is the HDG Bug on the Pilot's side HSI.  The AFCS will not follow any flight plans inputted via GPS, nor will follow other navaids.

### BARO ALT Hold

BARO ALT Hold Provides automatic control of the aircraft's barometric altitude, keeping altitude stable at the moment of engagement. CH47D Does not feature an altitude select mode. Instead, the aircraft will aim to maintain the current altitude and a V/S of zero by adjusting the collective.

* To engage, make sure that the AFCS SYSTEM SELECT is ON (either in the 1 / 2 / BOTH position). Only then press the BARO Alt button to engage system.&#x20;
* Only engage BARO ALT when the vertical speed is close to zero (eg. aircraft is on stable flight). This avoids aggressive corrections by the aircraft upon engaging.&#x20;
* After engaging, **move your HARDWARE COLLECTIVE AXIS TO THE MINIMUM** (eg. if using a throttle quadrant, move to IDLE position). This will avoid hardware conflicting with the controller script, leaving complete collective authority to the automatic system.&#x20;
* To change altitude, disengage the system, manually fly to the desired altitude and then reengage.
* Engaging BARO ALT Hold mode will disengage Radio ALT Hold automatically, and viceversa.&#x20;

### RAD Alt Hold

RAD ALT Hold Provides automatic control of the aircraft's altitude, following the terrain to mantain a constant altitude above the ground following the radio altimeter. The aircraft will aim to maintain the Radio Altitude at the moment of engagement.

* To engage, make sure that the AFCS SYSTEM SELECT is ON (either in the 1 / 2 / BOTH position). Only then press the RAD Alt button to engage system.&#x20;
* Only engage RAD ALT when the vertical speed is close to zero (eg. aircraft is on stable flight). This avoids aggressive corrections by the aircraft upon engaging.&#x20;
* After engaging, **move your HARDWARE COLLECTIVE AXIS TO THE MINIMUM** (eg. if using a throttle quadrant, move to IDLE position). This will avoid hardware conflicting with the controller script, leaving complete collective authority to the automatic system.&#x20;
* To change altitude, disengage the system, manually fly to the desired altitude and then reengage.
* Beware that Radio ALT Hold has a high sampling rate, and as such the system may perform aggressive corrections on unstable terrain. The aircraft will also react to ground obstacles, such as buildings and vegetation, as these are detected by the radio altimeter.&#x20;
* Engaging Rad ALT Hold mode will disengage BARO ALT Hold automatically, and viceversa.&#x20;

### Controlling Airspeed

The CH47D lacks a mode for airspeed or pitch control. Instead, the pilot shall use the Rotor Longitudinal Pitch to adjust and control the aircraft's pitch. Doing so will also allow speed control when the altitude modes are engaged.&#x20;

* Make sure your hardware is setup for helicopter control - assign two buttons to control the Rotor Longitudinal Pitch as explained in the [Recommended Hardware Configuration](/miltech-simulations-ch47d/product-information/recommended-hardware-configuration)
* With either ALT Mode engaged (BARO or RAD), applying rotor trim DOWN will decrease the pitch and accelerate the aircraft forward. The AP system will increase collective to compensate and keep the V/S constant. Increasing Pitch will decelerate the aircraft, and the aircraft will automatically react by decreasing collective to keep V/S constant.

### Controlling Vertical Speed

The CH47D lacks a mode for vertical speed control. Therefore, pilots must manually fly any maneuvers that require changes in altitude and vertical speed control.&#x20;

### Control Bindings

All three modes (HDG HOLD, BARO ALT HOLD and RAD ALT HOLD) can be easily keybinded using default MSFS events (`TOGGLE AUTOPILOT HEADING HOLD`, `TOGGLE AUTOPILOT ALTITUDE HOLD`, `TOGGLE AUTOPILOT RADIO ALTITUDE HOLD` respectively).

AFCS System Selector can be keybinded using LVARs. Beware that the modes above will not engage unless an AFCS System is selected (1/2/Both)

# Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)

An Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) is a digital device, generally a Tablet, that provides the pilot with additional information. On Miltech Simulations CH47D, the EFB is the main way of interacting with the aircraft - from operating doors, launching missions, and loading cargo.&#x20;

4. **Load Selector:** Display lists of loads available, depending on which option (internal/external) is selected. Clicking on any load will spawn it, either inside the cargo bay (internal) or near the aircraft (external).

#### Upon Selecting any of the external load options:

5. **External Load Selected,** in this example the RHIB Boat.
6. **External Load Radar & Target:** Upon selecting an external load, the object will spawn near the aircraft (usually at 9-o-clock). The radar screen allows the user to easily navigate the aircraft to the hover point directly above the load. The user must then slowly and carefully fly the aircraft until the red dot (target) is fully inside the green ring, and hover in position for a few seconds.&#x20;
7. **Altitude above Ground Radar:** To safely operate the aircraft in hover and successfully pick up the loads, the user must consider the altitude above ground. The range for picking up loads is from 15-45 feet above ground. A white arrow on the right side of the scale indicates the ideal pickup altitude ("target altitude"). Ideally, you are at, or slightly above, the target altitude. Loads will be automatically released upon crossing below 50ft. &#x20;
8. **Hoist/Sling Status:** Displays the status of the sling loads. Will display a countdown from 5-0 when the aircraft is in hover position within the pickup limits, after which it will display "Hooked". Will display "Released" upon release of the loads due to crossing below 50ft. Will display "Broken" if the maximum G value has been broken or in violent maneuvers.&#x20;
9. **Hook Mode:** Displays the required hook mode to be selected on the overhead panel for successful pick up of the loads. If the Hook Mode is not selected correctly, a red blinking warning will be displayed.&#x20;

  * Slide can be extended only if Ramp is lowered and Top is open.

## Internal Cargo Configuration

The spacious cabin can be used for carrying troops, vehicles, supplies, and equipment. This rendition of the CH47D includes:

* **Troops:** Depiction of a generic troop load being transported inside the helicopter.&#x20;
* **Medvac:** Depiction of a generic Medical Evacuation setup, with two injured patients escorted by a special military medical team. &#x20;
* **Special Ops Rhib:** Depiction of a Special Ops Rigid-Hull Inflatable Boat that can be deployed to (or rescued from) a combat field directly from the helicopter.&#x20;
* **Pallets:** Depiction of a generic Pallet Setup for humanitarian aid, supply transport or heavy cargo transport.
* **Humvee:** Depiction of a heavy armored vehicle, transported inside the cargo bay. A total of two humvees can be transported - one inside the helicopter and one externally.&#x20;

### Loading Procedure

The [Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)](/miltech-simulations-ch47d/aircraft-and-systems/electronic-flight-bag-efb) is used to load and unload internal cargo to the aircraft.&#x20;

1. Turn on the EFB screen by pressing the **HOME** Button
2. Navigate to the **LOAD** page
3. Select "Internal Loads"
4. Load/Unload cargo by pressing on the available options.&#x20;
   1. A single cargo load type (External or Internal) can be active at any given moment.
   2. Selecting a different load type will unload the active option, and load the selected option.
   3. Loading any external cargo load will automatically unload any internal cargo.

For oversized or heavy cargo that cannot be carried inside the cabin, the CH47D uses an external load configuration. This involves attaching the cargo to the helicopter using a sling. Depicted in brackets is the sling load configuration used in each case. This rendition of the CH47D includes:

* **\[TANDEM] UAV Container:** Depiction of a generic UAV Container, used to control unmanned aerial vehicles from the battlefield.
* **\[MID] Blackhawk Helicopter Fuselage:** Depiction of a Blackhawk Helicopter fuselage for rescue or transport operations.
* **\[MID] Cargo Nets:** Large cargo nets for Vertical Replenishment Operations.
* **\[TANDEM] Large Rhib:** Depiction of an oversize Rigid-Hull Inflatable Boat for patrol or SEAL operations.
* **\[TANDEM] Humvee:** Depiction of a heavy armored vehicle, transported as a sling-loaded cargo.
* **\[MID] Water Bucket:** For firefighting operations.

### Cargo Hooks

The CH47D features three Cargo Hooks:

* \[1] Front Fixed Cargo Hook
* \[2] Mid Retractable Cargo Hook
* \[3] Aft Fixed Cargo Hook

### Hoist Modes

Four configurations can be used for different cargo loads:

* Tandem, in which both the front and aft hooks are used. Eg. UAV Container, Large Rhib, Humvee.
* Mid, in which only the mid hook is used. Eg. Blackhawk, Cargo Nets, Water Bucket.&#x20;
* Aft, in which only the aft hook is used \[NOT DEPICTED ON THIS PRODUCT]
* Front, in which only the front hook is used \[NOT DEPICTED ON THIS PRODUCT]

Regardless of the sling configuration, weight is always added directly to the aircraft's center of gravity. This is due to the limitations of dynamic weight loading on MSFS.&#x20;

Hoist mode must be selected on the overhead panel before picking up external loads. Selection of the Mid Hoist Mode will additionally operate the Hoist Door automatically.&#x20;

### Loading Procedure

The [Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)](/miltech-simulations-ch47d/aircraft-and-systems/electronic-flight-bag-efb) is used to load and unload internal cargo to the aircraft.&#x20;

1. Turn on the EFB screen by pressing the **HOME** Button
2. Navigate to the **LOAD** page
3. Select "External Loads"
4. Load/Unload cargo by pressing on the available options.&#x20;
   1. A single cargo load type (External or Internal) can be active at any given moment.
   2. Selecting a different load type will unload the active option, and load the selected option.
5. Select the correct Sling Mode on the overhead panel. Sling mode depends on the type of load (Tandem or Mid). The tablet will display a blinking red error message if the sling mode is not configured correctly.&#x20;
6. **The selected object will spawn near the aircraft - usually at 9 o'clock.** Takeoff and establish a hover.
7. Use the Tablet Radar to slowly approach the object:
   1. Sustain a controlled hover. Altitude must be **at or slightly above the target altitude as indicated on the tablet.**
   2. Approach the object slowly.&#x20;
   3. **Object (Red Dot) must be within the area marked by the green circle.** Keep altitude as close to the target as possible.
   4. Sustain hover for a few seconds while the cargo is loaded.
   5. Upon confirmation that cargo has been successfully loaded, apply collective and increase altitude.&#x20;
8. **Cargo will be automatically dropped upon crossing below 50ft.**&#x20;
9. **The cargo sling may break in high G/violent maneuvers.**&#x20;
10. **Dropped cargo can be picked up again. However, you must increase the altitude >100ft before dropped cargo is available for pickup again.**

# Missions

Miltech Simulations CH47D includes a growing number of missions, as well as custom scenery packs.

Missions are predefined flights, from one location to another, featuring custom sceneries in both the initial and final locations and activities to do along the way. Missions are only accessible through the [Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)](/miltech-simulations-ch47d/aircraft-and-systems/electronic-flight-bag-efb) on free flight.

Missions are designed so the pilot follows a set of Mission Dispatch Instructions but must fully configure, execute, and perform the mission by themselves. This means that the pilot will not be assisted or guided through the mission, but rather must set the flight route as defined on the Dispatch Instructions to reach the final location. This also allows for creativity and free-flying after the mission has been completed.&#x20;

Missions are not fully compatible with multiplayer. Full multiplayer compatibility is not planned due to MSFS Limitations. All missions and scenarios featured in this product are either loosely based on real events or are entirely fictional. The content has been developed using only publicly available information. ### Accessing Missions

1. Launch a flight with the CH47D at any airport in the world.&#x20;
2. Turn on the EFB screen by pressing the **HOME** Button
3. Navigate to the **MISSION** page
4. Select any mission from the list.
5. Wait a few minutes for the mission to load completely. The aircraft will be automatically relocated to the start location and all required mission objects will be loaded.

### **MISSION 1: CANADIAN ROCKIES FIRES**

For the past several years, the province of Alberta, Canada, has been affected by an ongoing, record-setting series of wildfires. These ongoing fires have turned large areas of untouched nature into burnt land, posing a significant threat to both natural habitats and human settlements. A CH47D has been dispatched to an uncontrolled wildfire near the town of Banff. The fire is occurring in a hard-to-reach area because of the mountainous landscape.

Distance to Target: 60nm

Expected Duration: 50 minutes

Los Angeles, known for its sprawling cityscape, is now facing a critical emergency. In this hypothetical scenario, a massive fire has erupted at the large refinery located just south of the city. A CH47D has been dispatched from John Wayne Airport to assist in extinguishing the fire.

Expected Duration: 35 minutes

### **MISSION 1: OPERATION HORNS CALL \[MILTECH SUPERCARRIER PRO REQUIRED]**

An Independence-Class ship serving in the Operations Horns Call, an international mission to ensure maritime security and combat piracy, is in need of supplies. A CH47D has been dispatched from nearby Chabelley Airfield in a seaborne resupply mission, carrying everything from food and fuel to medical supplies and spare parts. Your task is to visually locate the ship, land on the deck and safely deliver the cargo. Miltech Supercarrier Pro product is required for this mission.

Distance to Target: 35nm

Expected Duration: 40 minutes

### **MISSION 1: ALASKA ROADSIDE RESCUE**

An infrastructure expansion project in a remote area of Alaska has resulted in an accident. A large-scale fire engulfed the equipment and vehicles. Fortunately, workers were able to extinguish the fires and suffered only minor injuries. Alaska State Troopers are on site, but the treacherous terrain makes traditional rescue efforts of those injured nearly impossible. A CH47D from Brayant Army Airfield has been dispatched to the scene.

The squadron will provide air transport for a Special Ops team from the base to the training grounds.&#x20;

* **RAF Odiham:** (ICAO: EGVO) is a Royal Air Force base located in Hampshire, England. It's a vital hub for the RAF's CH47D helicopter force, providing support for operations worldwide.
* **Bryant Army Heliport:** (ICAO: PAFR) is a United States Army airfield located at Fort Richardson, near Anchorage, Alaska. This heliport serves as a base for various Army aviation units, supporting training maneuvers, logistical operations, and readiness needs within the Alaskan environment. This base is often used by CH47D operated by the Alaska National Guard.
* **Chabelley Airfield:** (ICAO: HDCH) is a military airfield located near Djibouti City, Djibouti. It is a mixed-use facility serving as a base for the Djibouti Air Force, as well as a crucial operational hub for the United States and French militaries in the Horn of Africa. This base sees a very diverse range of operations, from UAV, Large Cargo Transport, and Helicopter ops.&#x20;

Camp Resilience is a forward operating base established in the Jordanian desert, strategically positioned near the Iraq/Syria border. The base layout prioritizes functionality, consisting of modular structures and field tents. Camp Resilience serves as a crucible for CH47D operations. Aircrews endure intensive training regimes simulating the rigors of desert warfare, including sling-load operations, tactical insertions, and casualty evacuations under challenging conditions. To prepare crews for complex mission scenarios, the camp boasts specialized training facilities. These include simulated embassy compounds designed for practicing evacuations in confined, potentially hostile urban environments.
* **"Al Sahra Base" Fictional Military Compound, Kuwait (And Nearby Training Exercises)** (ICAO US02). Is an improvised military outpost in the Kuwaiti desert near the Iran border. The base is smaller than permanent installations, with basic buildings and landing pads built for fast setup. Hesco barriers and sandbags provide perimeter security. Al Sahra is primarily a CH47D helicopter base. The base's key role is desert training. The surrounding area is used for realistic missions - CH47D practice difficult takeoffs and landings in dust and heat, along with troop landings and extractions in challenging scenarios.

## Overview

A UK Carrier Strike Group is a collection of naval assets from the United Kingdom, led by a Queen Elizabeth-Class aircraft carrier, that are organized and deployed with the goal of conducting a wide range of military operations at sea, including power projection, strike warfare, and maritime security operations.

A Carrier Strike Group from the United Kingdom typically consists of a Queen Elizabeth-Class Aircraft Carrier, two Type 23 Frigates and two Type 45 Destroyers, along with a fleet of F-35Bs Fighters, Wildcats, Chinooks and Merlin helicopters.

# Introduction

A UK Carrier Strike Group is a collection of naval assets from the United Kingdom, led by a Queen Elizabeth-Class aircraft carrier, that are organized and deployed with the goal of conducting a wide range of military operations at sea, including power projection, strike warfare, and maritime security operations.

A Carrier Strike Group from the United Kingdom typically consists of a Queen Elizabeth-Class Aircraft Carrier, two Type 23 Frigates and two Type 45 Destroyers, along with a fleet of F-35Bs Fighters, Wildcats, Chinooks and Merlin helicopters.

**FEATURES:**

# Miltech Universal Carrier Toolbar

UK Carrier Strike Group V2 uses the Miltech Universal Carrier Toolbar - which you may be familiar with if you have used Supercarrier Pro before.

The in-sim Toolbar provides a common platform for all Miltech Carriers to be located in the World (providing Bearing and Distance to nearest carriers), as well as a platform to manage carriers' elevators, animations; teleport to Carrier, Hangar and Approach; and sync with Multiplayer.

The app will automatically switch to the UK Carriers UI when in near proximity to one of these ships.

## App Overview

UK Carriers UI Mode does not feature LRLS, FLOLS or LSO/Scoring, and as such it does not have a landing page.

# Controls Tab

1. **Enable Modern Arrestors:** Though UK Carriers do not have arrestor cables, we have enabled the Modern Arrestors function to enable the use of other aircraft that would not normally operate on STOVL Carriers. Modern Arrestors enable arrestor cable functionality to any aircraft, regardless of whether the aircraft has a tailhook or not.&#x20;
   1. To enable modern arrestors, click the button in the Approach tab on approach. The arrestors will engage upon contact with the flight deck. Modern arrestors remain active until manually deactivated.
   2. Modern arrestors can be toggled "always on" on the settings tab. The "enable modern arrestors" button on the Landing page will disappear if "Modern arrestors always on" is enabled on the settings tab.
2. **Elevators:** Moves selected elevator up/down. UK Carriers feature a total of two elevators.&#x20;
3. **Quick Taxi:** With Quick Taxi, you can easily reposition the plane with the joystick. Move the stick up or down to move forward or backward. Move the stick left or right to rotate left or right. Particularly useful when moving inside the Hangar, when pushback is required, or with VTOL aircraft, such as the Osprey and Harrier.&#x20;
4. **Align to Wind:** Only available on moving carriers. Aligns the carrier with the current wind direction. Doesn't work with multiplayer auto-sync. Align to Wind should be used when the aircraft is not on deck or in the hangar. If the aircraft happens to be on the deck or hangar, it's best to immediately teleport - otherwise the aircraft will fall in the water.
5. **Multiplayer Auto-sync:** Only available on moving carriers. Syncs the position of your local carrier with the multiplayer server. Required for multiplayer flight on moving carriers, as otherwise the location would be different across different players. 6. **Teleport (Experimental)**: Teleports aircraft to selected location - Runway, Parking, Hangar or Approach. Sets the state of the aircraft according to selected Teleport. Experimental feature. # Teleporting

Teleporting can be used on moving ships to quickly spawn on the carrier's deck after starting a flight in the air. Teleport is currently possible to:

## Description

The Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers of the United Kingdom's Royal Navy consists of two vessels. The lead ship of her class, HMS Queen Elizabeth, and her sister ship, HMS Prince of Wales. They form the central components of the UK Carrier Strike Group.

Queen-Elizabeth Class Ships are capable of carrying up to 40 aircraft, including the advanced F-35B Lightning II stealth fighters and helicopters. Both ships are equipped with a ski-jump ramp to launch F-35B fighters and other STOVL Aircraft.

# Type 45 destroyer

## Description

The Type 45 destroyer, also known as the Daring class, is a highly advanced air-defense destroyer in the United Kingdom's Royal Navy, designed to replace the older Type 42 destroyers and serve as a key component of the Royal Navy's Carrier Strike Group. With a displacement of around 8,500 tonnes and a length of 152.4 meters, it is one of the largest and most capable destroyers in the world. The ship features a stealthy design with reduced radar cross-section, powered by an Integrated Electric Propulsion (IEP), allowing it to reach speeds over 30 knots. The Type 45 supports helicopter operations, typically using a Merlin HM2 for various missions, including anti-submarine warfare. With a crew of around 190, the Type 45 has been deployed globally for air defense, maritime security, and NATO operations since its introduction in the mid-2000s, and it remains a critical asset in the Royal Navy's fleet, ensuring the protection of UK naval interests worldwide.


# Type 23 frigate

## Description

The Type 23 frigate, also known as the Duke class, is a versatile and multi-role warship serving in the United Kingdom's Royal Navy. Originally designed during the Cold War for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) to protect naval task groups from Soviet submarines, these frigates have evolved to perform a wide range of missions, including surface warfare, maritime security, and humanitarian operations. With a displacement of around 4,900 tonnes and a length of approximately 133 meters, the Type 23 features a stealthy design, advanced sensors, and a Combined Diesel-Electric and Gas (CODLAG) propulsion system, allowing for quiet operation during ASW missions and speeds exceeding 28 knots when needed. Each ship can operate a Merlin or Wildcat helicopter for extended operational capabilities. With a crew complement of about 185, the Type 23 has been the workhorse of the Royal Navy since its introduction in the late 1980s and has seen service in global operations ranging from anti-piracy missions to humanitarian assistance.&#x20;

# Flight Deck Equipment

## Elevators

Elevators provide movement of aircraft, vehicles, and equipment from the hangar bay and the flight deck. Elevators are typically located near the Bridge of the carrier. In the case of the Queen Elizabeth Class, two elevators are available.

Elevators are operated through the [Miltech Universal Carrier Toolbar](/uk-carrier-strike-group-v2/supercarriers/miltech-universal-carrier-toolbar) under the Controls tab.

## Hangar Bay

The hangar bay is located below the flight deck and spawns two-thirds of the total length of the carrier. It is used to store aircraft, supplies, ammunition, and cargo. It is accessible through the elevators.


# Instrument Approach & Communications Equipment

Navigraph and similar apps that replace stock navigation data seem to be incompatible with Carrier TACANs. These apps seem to exclude any TACANs and Navaids not in the database. We are currently investigating this issue.&#x20;

## Tactical Air Navigation System (TACAN)

Navigation system used by military aircraft. It provides the user with bearing and distance to a ship-borne station. A TACAN typically has a range of 200 miles. TACAN is only available on static ship locations.&#x20;

## Instrument Landing System (ILS/ICLS)

This operates much like a traditional ILS system, but it is only operational for US aircraft carriers. Precision radio navigation system that provides short-range guidance to aircraft to allow them to approach a runway at night or in bad weather. ILS is only available on static ship locations.&#x20;

## Automated Carrier Landing System (ACLS)

ACLS is not available at static or moving locations, as this is currently not supported by MSFS.

## Carrier Air Traffic Control Center (CATCC) & Communications

Static carriers are equipped with a UNICOM frequency for AI and multiplayer traffic communications using the stock MSFS ATC. Moving carriers are not equipped with UNICOM frequencies.&#x20;

Static carriers are also equipped with ATIS for weather reports.

# Multiplayer Operations

Restarting a flight after Multiplayer Sync may freeze the simulator. Launch a new flight from the WorldMap every time you wish to restart a flight.&#x20;

## Static vs Moving

Static Carriers are inherently compatible with multiplayer as there are no "moving parts". This means that the carrier is static at that location on all systems on the network.&#x20;

On the contrary, Moving carriers can be located at slightly different locations due to their moving nature. For that reason, moving carriers must be "synced for multiplayer" through the [Miltech Universal Carrier Toolbar](/uk-carrier-strike-group-v2/supercarriers/miltech-universal-carrier-toolbar) under the Controls tab.

* After syncing for multiplayer, the aircraft will spawn on the carrier deck automatically.&#x20;
* Align to Wind cannot be used over multiplayer. All other functions are available.
* Multiplayer syncing resets every hour. A countdown is visible on the Supercarrier Toolbar. After the counter reaches 0, Multiplayer Sync will deactivate. To continue flying over multiplayer and synced with other players, click on "Multiplayer sync" again.&#x20;
* It is recommended that if little time is left before the counter reaches zero, you wait until the syncing restarts so it doesn't interrupt your flight.&#x20;

## Limitations over Multiplayer

Unfortunately, Multiplayer on MSFS is still quite limited. We are engineering ways around these limitations, but these will only come at a future update. As of initial release, the limitations are the following:

* Multiplayer on moving carriers require syncing. Syncing restarts every hour.
* Animations do not sync over multiplayer. Eg. if an aircraft goes down on the elevator, you will not see the animation, only the aircraft.
* &#x20;It is possible that you may see aircraft floating beyond the bounds of the aircraft carrier flight deck. This is due to inaccuracies in the aircraft position synced over Multiplayer.

Welcome to the user manual for the Miltech Simulations C-17 Globemaster III for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. The C-17 Globemaster III is a 4-engine, heavy-lift, military transport aircraft manufactured by American aerospace company Boeing. The prototype C-17 took its maiden flight on September 15, 1991 and serial production airframes entered service on January 17, 1995 with the United States Air Force.

The C-17 is used primarily by the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Air Force Reserve, and the U.S. Air National Guard. Other countries that operate the airframe include the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, India, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar. The C-17 is known for its operational versatility and mission adaptability, and it is renowned for being able to operate out of small and unimproved airfields. It can support military operations at all levels, tactical, operational, and strategic, and it can provide logistics for non-military initiatives including humanitarian assistance and scientific field work. The C-17 has operated on all seven continents and in all types of environments, from desert to polar, and has supported combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, among other locations.

The C-17 program traces its history to the 1979 Department of Defense Cargo Experimental (C-X) program. It outlined a request for a jet-powered aircraft that could perform global, strategic heavy-lift missions inclusive of troop transport and aerial delivery of paratroops and materiel. The aircraft needed to be able to accommodate the U.S. military’s largest pieces of equipment, including tanks, armored personnel carriers, trucks, and helicopters. It further needed to be able to operate out of short and austere airfields, including dirt strips. Meeting the requirement would prove technically difficult as it sought a functional hybrid of a C-130 Hercules, known for its ability to operate out of short and unimproved airfields, with the C-141 Starlifter, a heavy-lift strategic cargo airplane.

The military awarded the contract to American aviation and defense contractor McDonnell Douglas in August of 1981. The project was named the C-17 Globemaster III, extending a naming lineage that began with the Douglas C-74 Globemaster, a piston-powered cargo aircraft that first flew in 1945, and was continued with the Douglas C-124 Globemaster II, a piston-powered freighter that took its maiden flight in 1949.

In developing the C-17, McDonnell Douglas relied on work it had completed during the 1970s with their YC-15. The YC-15 was a 4-engine, jet-powered, experimental, short take-off and landing (STOL) tactical airlifter intended to replace the C-130 Hercules. The C-17 design, while similar to the YC-15, is much larger and uses a different wing design. Production began in the early 1990s after initial successful test flights; Boeing took over the contract when it acquired McDonnell Douglas in 1997.&#x20;

The C-17 is crewed by three: two pilots and a single loadmaster. It features a high-mounted, swept main wing with winglets for mitigation of drag-inducing vortex formation. The wing incorporates externally blown flaps for short field performance and uses advanced airfoil designs to maximize aerodynamic efficiency. Its large cargo hold can accommodate over 100 combat-loaded troops, 48 litters for medical transport operations, a single M1 Abrams main battle tank, tracked and wheeled vehicles, and all types of transport containers and pallets. It has an advanced glass cockpit and redundant digital fly-by-wire flight controls.

The aircraft measures 174 feet in length, stands 55 feet, 1 inch tall, and has a wingspan of 169 feet, 10 inches. It is powered by four wing-mounted Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 high-bypass turbofan engines that each generate up to 40,440 pounds of thrust.

The aircraft can carry up to 170,900 pounds of payload, has a range of 2,780 miles (extendible by in-flight refueling), and it cruises at 520 miles per hour. It can operate out of airfields as short as 3,000 feet in length, depending on load, and it can execute a 3-point turn within 80 feet due to thrust reversers.

We are excited to present this aircraft as our first collaboration with Microsoft and to see it officially released as part of the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Premium Package.

## NOTAM - VERSION V1.1.15

**PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS**

Please note that starting on Version V1.1.15, various aggressive measures have been taken to reduce the performance impact of the aircraft, particularly on Console:

* PILOT AND COPILOT MFD will now only display the "Primary Flight Display" Page. Other pages have been disabled on this display.
* PILOT AND COPILOT MFD will now function as a single-instance gauge. Meaning that they both display the exact same information: There is no individual control of Flight Directors or RA/BA Altitude Tape.
* BOTH CENTRAL MFDs will now only render the ND, PPI, ENG and CONFIG Pages. These will no longer render the Primary Flight Display page.
* BOTH HEADS UP DISPLAYS will now be rendered as a single-instance gauge. Meaning that both will display the exact same information: There is no individual control of Decluttler Stages, Flight Directors, or RA/BA Altitude Tape.
* COPILOT FMCs are now a mirror of the PILOT FMCs; resulting in only two usable FMCs on the pilot's side.

These adjustments were necessary to maintain performance consistency across **both PC and Xbox, in the future PlayStation** platforms. It is important to note that the total amount of code has a direct impact on memory usage. Due to the highly complex nature of this avionics suite, running 4x instances of the FMC and 4x instances of every MFD page exceeded the memory and performance limits of console hardware. Please note that an uncapped stream of the aircraft for PC Hardware is not available at this time.&#x20;

In future updates, less restrictive optimizations may be introduced to restore functionality while maintaining negligible performance impact.
